Studio Practice
Using only the highest quality oil paints, Carol begins each
new piece with thin washes of just one or two colours. A simple
composition is quickly, spontaneously sketched out, allowing
the paint to run freely.
This under-painting is then worked into, removing pigment to add detail and
bring back light, then blending and blurring to soften the effect in certain
areas. Carol then uses thinning agents to disperse the pigment in exciting
ways, experimenting with the medium to create different effects until the essence
of an image begins to emerge. The resulting piece is then left to dry for a
few days.
Building the following layers almost subconsciously, Carol enters
a dialogue with the image that may last weeks, sometimes months,
as she embarks on a passionate journey of exploration through colour,
form, light, and energy, into the dimensions of sensation, imagination
and ideas. Using layers of transparent glazes partially blended
with opaque pigment, Carol shows great sensitivity to the resonance
in certain colour combinations as she creates a sense of depth
combined with a wonderful glowing light. Sometimes sections are
masked out and worked on separately in complementary colours to
create a further dimension whilst adding dynamic tension and structure
to the piece.
