Handwoven Textiles

Shirley's work is inspired by natural and man-made landscapes, capturing light, space, colour and texture and presenting them in abstract and figurative terms. Some of her work is concerned with the illusion caused by the play of light and shade across textured patterned and refelective surfaces, and nowhere does this work better than in some of her larger pieces. Weaving is the natural way for Shirley to communicate what she sees. Visual rhythms appear to her as vertical structure and horizontal movement, warp and weft. For those with an eye for something a little different, this is a fascinating form of art that works as well in the home as in a working environment, and yet costs in the same region as an original oil or watercolour painting. Shirley's most recent series of works are inspired by the awesome and dramatic landscapes of Arizona and Utah. woven from natural yarn in the wonderfully rich colours of the desert, these pieces capture the monumental spirit of wind-worn rock, sun-drenched earth and the infinite depth of heaven. There are twelve pieces planned for this series, each individual piece being totally unique as a one-off creation.
